Uganda Judicial Officers Association

Uganda Judicial Officers Association (UJOA) is an umbrella Association that brings together Judges, Registrars and Magistrates. The Association was founded in 1970 and it was known as Uganda Magistrates Association (UMA). The Association changed its previous name in the year 2000 so that it could embrace all cadre of the judicial officers. The Patron of the Association is the Hon. the Chief Justice of Uganda. The Association is headed by a democratically elected executive for a term of two years.

The following are the Executive Committee members;

  1. President
  2. Vice President
  3. General Secretary
  4. Treasurer
  5. Publicity Secretary/ Editor
  6. Assistant General Secretary
  7. Assistant Treasurer
  8. Assistant Publicity / Editor and two regional representatives from the Central, Eastern, Western and Northern regions.

The Association is affiliated to the Commonwealth Magistrates and Judges Association (CMJA), East African Magistrates and Judges Association (EAMJA), and our female members subscribe to both the National Association of Women Judges (NAWJ) and International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ).

The Association affairs are governed by a constitution and a democratically elected Executive Committee which provides the leadership. The main objectives of the Association among others are;

  • To lobby and advocate for the welfare of judicial officers, terms and conditions of service.
  • To maintain and defend the independence of the judiciary as enshrined in the constitution of the Republic of Uganda.
  • To undertake publication of Uganda Judicial journal and other professional publications.
  • To encourage legal studies in the country.
  • To promote better cooperation and understanding amongst judicial officers and other Associations connected with the prevention of crime
  • To liaise and network with other judicial Associations in other countries.
  • To suggest appropriate amendments to the laws and certification of customary law.
